The film stars Tom Hanks as Sam, a widower who tells his story of grief to a national radio program, which attracts the attention of Annie ( Meg Ryan), a reporter who is unhappily engaged. The film centers on a chaotic family as they drive from New Mexico to bring young Olive ( Abigail Breslin) to a child beauty pageant, in which she desperately wishes to compete.
